I’ve seen other bloggers post Sherlock and Mrs. Hudson for this meme, so let me go the other way. John and Mrs. Hudson, instead. Now, I think they do exactly the things Sherlock doesn’t have the patience for. All the civil, domestic things. Watching telly, having tea and biscuits together, talking about the weather. And, maybe I missed it, I dunno— but I think that one time, “Damn my leg!” is the only glimpse Mrs. Hudson sees of John as he was before Sherlock. For some reason, I think the only things they talk about are mundane things, and those concerning Sherlock. Nothing ever about John’s past (Afghanistan and all the rest), or about Mrs. Hudson’s (her husband and all the rest).
But that doesn’t make them distant. On the contrary, they’re casual, friendly (I think only Mrs. Hudson can comment on John’s love life and not get a remark back). And I’m keen to see how this develops, especially for series 3, when the events in Reichenbach aren’t ones that just happened fairly recently.
